Message to Faculty, Staff and Employees from President Underwood

September 29, 2021

I want to thank you for your continued commitment to keeping our campuses safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. As you may have read in the news, President Biden issued an Executive Order requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all federal contractors and their employees. Mercer is a federal contractor, so all full-time and part-time Mercer employees, including student employees, are required to be fully vaccinated under the Executive Order no later than December 8, 2021. Those employees who supervise student employees are responsible for communicating this requirement to the student employees under their supervision.

To the approximately 90 percent of you who are already fully vaccinated, thank you for taking this important step to keep yourselves and our campus communities safe. If you have not done so already, please send your vaccination card to myvaccine@mercer.edu with your full name and Mercer ID number in the subject line of the email.

To those of you who are not already fully vaccinated, you must submit proof that you are fully vaccinated no later than December 8, 2021. People are considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19 two weeks after they have received the second dose in a two-dose series (Pfizer or Moderna) or two weeks after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson & Johnson/Janssen). Because we are a federal contractor, you will not have the option of submitting to regular testing rather than being vaccinated.

If you are taking the Pfizer vaccine, you must have your first dose no later than November 3. You must have your second dose no later than November 24.

If you are taking the Moderna vaccine, you must have your first dose no later than October 27. You must have your second dose no later than November 24.

If you are taking the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine, you must have your single dose no later than November 24.

The December 8 deadline will arise quickly, so make your vaccination appointment as soon as possible. Vaccine appointments on campus may be made here. Once you are vaccinated, send a copy or photo of your vaccination card to myvaccine@mercer.edu with your full name and Mercer ID number in the subject line of the email.

Please get vaccinated. Failure to comply with this requirement will require the University to conclude your employment, which we would very much regret.

If you cannot be vaccinated due to a medical reason or due to your sincerely held religious beliefs in opposition to a vaccination, you must promptly contact Dr. Kelly Reffitt at reffitt_ke@mercer.edu by Friday, October 8, with your written request for an exemption, including supporting documentation.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
