Isolation After Testing Positive for COVID-19

January 10, 2022

Isolation Period

A student or employee who tests positive for COVID-19 must isolate for at least 5 full days past the  positive test date, regardless of vaccination status.

  • You must isolate for at least 5 full days if you are asymptomatic (no symptoms) OR your symptoms are improving and you have no fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Isolation is followed by 5 full days of wearing a high-filtration, well-fitting mask to minimize the risk of spreading the virus to others.
  • You must isolate for longer than 5 days if you have new symptoms or your symptoms are worsening. A Mercer Medicine physician or nurse practitioner will determine the length of your isolation.

You must be cleared from isolation by Mercer Medicine to return to campus.

Special Accommodations for Students Who Need to Be Isolated

Mercer University students who test positive for COVID-19 and live in Mercer-owned housing or the Lofts may go home to recover or may isolate in special accommodations set aside for this purpose. In certain situations, COVID-19-positive students residing in University housing or the Lofts may isolate in place as determined by Mercer Medicine and the Office of Residence Life.

Mercer has on-campus isolation units, consisting of a bedroom with bathroom access, in Macon and Atlanta for residential students who are unable to return home while they recuperate. The University has also partnered with a Macon hotel for additional isolation housing.

For an affected student living in University-owned housing, the Office of Housing and Residence Life staff member will coordinate moving the student into an isolation room and assist with academic and meal accommodations. An affected student living in the Lofts will also receive assistance with academic and meal accommodations while receiving direction on isolation from Lofts staff.

Bear Check for Isolating Students

The Campus Health Center staff will monitor students using the online Bear Check of symptoms. Students are required to complete the Bear Check during each day of isolation. Students also will be advised to contact their own family physician.

Isolation Clearance

Students will not be permitted leave isolation or return to campus until they are cleared by the Campus Health Center/Mercer Medicine. Employees may not return to work on campus until cleared by Mercer Medicine.

Please call the Campus Health Center 24/7 COVID-19 Hotline at (478) 301-7425 if you have questions about isolation.
