About Mercer Equestrian Club

The Mercer University Equestrian Club is a recognized club sport within the Department of Recreational Sports and Wellness.  Newly formed in 2006, the club is open to all full-time Mercer students, faculty and staff regardless of previous riding experience.  The club lessons are provided by several local stables located within 30 minutes of the main campus in Macon that offer hunt seat, dressage and western riding lessons for all levels of experience.  Host stables include Heart and Hooves in Macon and Burr Oak Farm in Byron.  Both stables have experienced instructors and school horses.

Club meetings are held at least once a month on the Macon campus and once a month at a stable or show.  Whether you are an experienced rider who would like to be able to continue to ride while in school or a someone who has never ridden before and would like to learn how to ride, we invite you to join the club.   Non-riders who would just like to learn more are also welcome.   The club coordinates events (both equestrian and non-horsey) and lessons for club members.  Club members are not required to ride but will have an opportunity to learn about horse care and competitions.  For 2008-2009, Club dues are $25 per year. All members who volunteer one hour will receive a club t-shirt.  Individual non-club lessons are always available through the host stables, but may be priced differently than club lessons.  Lessons typically cost from $30 - $45 per hour depending on the stable, discipline, level and whether private or semi-private. A limited number of partial lesson scholarships will be available to help offset the cost of riding for club members whether hunt seat or western and for all skill levels.  Contact the club advisor, Carole Burrowbridge,  early each semester if you are interested in a scholarship.

Local host stables will provide horses and hunt seat, dressage and western saddlery.  All club riders must have a signed liability release on file with both the club and farm before riding.  Safety helmets and paddock, roper or tall boots with a low heel are required of all riders.  Stables usually have safety helmets available for those who don't have their own helmets.  The club has a few pairs of boots to loan short-term.  Riders who plan to take more than one or two lessons should buy their own helmets.  Boots and helmets and may be purchased locally or from online tack shops such as Dover Saddlery or Stateline Tack.  Jeans or breeches should be worn for riding. Chaps or half chaps are ok.  Riders will need to provide their own transportation to and from the host stables in located in Byron, Lizella and Gray.

Club members who are interested in competitive riding may have opportunities to ride in local competitions and/or intercollegiate competitions.  Competitive riders will be responsible for attending additional coaching lessons and may incur additional costs for coaching, show clothes, entry fees, and transportation to shows.  Club members who would like to bring their horse with them, may contact the advisor for a list of local boarding stables and the contact information for the club's host stables.
