Message to the Mercer Community from President Underwood

July 22, 2020

The University is firming up its preparations for the fall semester, which gets underway in mid-August. Balancing the robust educational experience for which Mercer is known with protocols, resources and procedures to reduce COVID-19 risks to our community has been our principal focus over the last few months. Our preparations for the fall have been aided by in-person classes during Summer Session II. We have seen the effectiveness of face coverings, social distancing, and other measures to minimize exposure to the novel coronavirus, and we have continued to refine our testing, isolation and notification protocols. The University also continues to monitor local conditions and receive frequent updates and input from infectious disease experts in the Mercer School of Medicine, as well as from public health officials.

I know there are many questions, and we are seeking to answer as many of them as we can. Our plans and preparations will continue to evolve between now and the beginning of fall classes. The best way to keep up with the University’s plans and to find answers to some of your questions is to visit the Mercer COVID-19 website, which is regularly updated with new information and additional details. There are answers to a number of frequently asked questions on the site, as well as an overview of our fall preparations. Another helpful resource is The Den, a new website we have created for the Mercer community to highlight ways that we as Mercerians are navigating these unprecedented times.

I appreciate the many students, faculty, staff and parents who have provided encouraging words over the last few weeks. We are committed to providing the very best Mercer experience we can in the safest possible environment and will continue to send you updates as we approach the beginning of fall classes in mid-August.
