Message to the Mercer Community from President Underwood

August 26, 2021

Mercer Community,

I want to thank members of our Mercer community for your commitment to taking advantage of our most powerful tool in defeating the public health menace posed by COVID-19. At least 86% of our faculty and staff have completed or begun the process of being fully vaccinated. More than 81% of our students have done so as well. On behalf of our community, let me express our gratitude to all of you who have taken this important step.

Several of you have expressed reluctance to being vaccinated until there is a vaccine option that has received full approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This occurred earlier this week when the FDA granted full approval to Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine for people 16 and up. Now is the time for those of you who have been awaiting final FDA approval to step up and receive your vaccine.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is administered by Mercer’s Campus Health Center in Macon. We strongly encourage those who have been waiting for the full FDA approval to get the vaccine as soon as possible. You may do so on August 31 and September 10 from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Other dates will be added very soon. The Moderna vaccine, which is awaiting full FDA approval, is also administered at the Macon and Atlanta Campus Health Centers.

Vaccine appointments may be made here.

Since the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines came out late last year, more than 363 million doses have been administered in the U.S. They have proven to be safe, effective and particularly successful in preventing hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

The Macon vaccine clinics will be held in Penfield Hall. The Atlanta vaccines will be available in the Sheffield Center.

If you have vaccination questions, call the 24/7 Campus Health Center Hotline – (478) 301-7425.
