Message to Returning Non-Macon Undergrad Students From President Underwood

July 24, 2020

As we look forward to coming together this fall at Mercer University, we are dedicated to ensuring that you have a vibrant and meaningful college experience in a safe and healthy environment. Keeping that commitment in mind, we have been working diligently to prepare for your return by implementing appropriate protocols to limit exposure to COVID-19. The health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remains our top priority. Consequently, our fall semester protocols for all campus locations are developed under the guidance of leading infectious disease experts in Mercer’s School of Medicine. This situation is dynamic and evolving, and correspondingly our response and policies may change as we receive new information from government authorities and health officials.

While respecting the rights of individuals, we must remain united as one Mercer community.  We must unilaterally share the responsibility of taking the necessary steps to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infections throughout our campuses. As a Mercer family, we must all do our part to uphold and adhere to newly implemented protocols to respect others and support the health and safety of all as we welcome our new and returning students in the fall.

Prior to beginning fall semester classes, all students – other than Macon undergraduates, who are required to be tested – will need to complete a brief, COVID-19 screening survey.  The survey will be open July 24 – 31. Students who do not complete the survey will not be allowed to attend fall classes.

The survey, which opens when you log in to your MyMercer account, will guide you through actions you need to take, or can take, based on your responses. In summary, these are:

  • Students may be required to be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19), depending on their survey responses. Regardless of survey results, any student may request and be tested for COVID-19.
  • Students either required or choosing to be tested have two options:
    • Schedule a COVID-19 test through the Student Health Center – Mercer Medicine from July 27-31 or August 3-7 on either the Atlanta or Macon campus.

Atlanta Campus: Call 678-547-6130 for a testing appointment.
Macon Campus: Call 478-301-SICK (7425) for a testing appointment.

Mercer Medicine will inform you of the results and issue clearance to begin classes.

    • Choose to be tested off-campus by a clinical testing provider during the date window of July 27 – August 7, and email your test results, with “COVID Test” in the subject line, to Mercer Medicine at shcmacon@mercer.edu by Friday, August 14. Mercer Medicine will inform you when you have clearance to begin classes.
  • If you have already been tested and the result was positive, you will most likely not need to be tested again. However, you must contact Mercer Medicine at 478-301-SICK (7425) to receive clearance, regardless of the test result.

We encourage you to follow these instructions within the specified timeline so that we can welcome all of you safely.

We look forward to seeing you in the fall!
