Message to Faculty and Staff from President Underwood

July 24, 2020

As we look forward to coming together this fall, we are dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy environment. Keeping that commitment in mind, we have been working diligently to prepare for the semester by implementing appropriate protocols to limit exposure to COVID-19. The health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remains our top priority. Consequently, our fall semester protocols for all campus locations are developed under the guidance of leading infectious disease experts in Mercer’s School of Medicine. This situation is dynamic and evolving, and correspondingly our response and policies may change as we receive new information from government authorities and health officials.

While respecting the rights of individuals, we must remain united as one Mercer community. We must unilaterally share the responsibility of taking the necessary steps to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infections throughout our campuses. As a Mercer family, we must all do our part to uphold and adhere to newly implemented protocols to respect others and support the health and safety of all as we welcome our new and returning students in the fall.

Prior to beginning fall semester classes, all faculty and staff must complete a brief, COVID-19 screening survey. The survey will be open July 24 – 31. Click this link to access the survey and receive guidance on actions you need to take, or can take, based on your responses. In summary, these are:

  • Faculty and staff may be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19), depending on survey responses. Regardless of survey results, any faculty or staff may request and be tested for COVID-19.
  • Faculty and staff have two testing options:
    1. Schedule a COVID-19 test through the Student Health Center – Mercer Medicine from July 27-31 or August 3-7 on either the Atlanta or Macon campus.Atlanta Campus: Call 678-547-6130 for a testing appointment.
Macon Campus: Call 478-301-SICK (7425) for a testing appointment.Mercer Medicine will inform you of the results and provide additional guidance. Human Resources will also be notified of positive results.
    2. Choose to be tested off-campus by a clinical testing provider during the date window of July 27 – August 7, and email your test results, with “COVID Test” in the subject line, to Mercer Medicine at shcmacon@mercer.edu.
  • If you have already been tested and the result was positive, you will most likely not need to be tested again. However, you may contact Mercer Medicine at 478-301-SICK (7425) to receive guidance, regardless of the test result.

We encourage you to follow these instructions within the specified timeline so that we can welcome all of you safely.

We look forward to seeing you in the fall!
