The WGS program offers a wide array of “Special Topics” courses (WGS 285, 385, 485) for students to select from. These courses supplement our regular course offerings and won’t be listed in the annual College catalogue, but will be found in each semester’s WGS course listings. The “Special Topics” courses allow the WGS program to offer specialized courses or courses covering new, emerging fields of study. We hope you will take advantage of these diverse course offerings.
In addition to the regular WGS course offerings listed on our “WGS Major” page, these “Special Topics” courses may be used to satisfy the category requirements for the WGS major. Majors are required to take one course in the “Global/Multicultural/Ethnic Minorities” category and courses from two of three area categories: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. As you will see in the listings below, some “Special Topics” courses may fulfill more than one category. For example, WGS 385/ENG 380/AFR 300, “African American Women’s Literature,” satisfies both the “Global/Multicultural/Ethnic Minorities” category and the “Humanities” category. While one course may satisfy dual categories, it does not count as two courses. The hour requirement for the WGS major is 27 hours.
WGS majors should consult the table below in determining if a “Special Topics” course fulfills one of the category requirements for the major. Since “Special Topics” courses change from semester to semester, not all WGS 285, 385, or 485 courses will be listed below. If you are a major signing up for a “Special Topics” course that you do not see below and need to know what category it fulfills, please contact the WGS Director, Dr. Mary Alice Morgan, at morgan_ma@mercer.edu or telephone her at 301-2571.
Though many of the courses below are cross-listed with other departments, if you are using a course to satisfy your WGS major or minor, you should register under the WGS designation.
