Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity 2003-2004

Undergraduate research at Mercer University is designed to provide students with an opportunity to join faculty in scholarly activity, either independently or in small teams, and mentored by a faculty member, students do intensive and self-directed research or creative work that results in an original scholarly paper or other product that can be formally presented on or off campus.

Undergraduate research promotes s student-faculty collaboration that enhances the educational environment for both students and faculty. Faculty members can enhance their teaching and contribute to their academic discipline and society at large by remaining active in research. Students become engaged learners whose scholarly work allows them to work closely with a faculty member inside and outside of the classroom. Undergraduate research and scholarly activity helps to

"endow students with capabilities for learning, not simply to inculcate facts, and to encourage dispositions of curiosity and inquiry, rather than to teach rote knowledge. This aim is more complex and more interesting than simply passing on facts. It involves developing in students the habits of mind the enables them to see situations and conceive problems" as faculty and professionals in their disciplines see and conceive them.
