Honor Council

Hearing Process

  1. Faculty member or student reports the alleged Honor Code violation to the Chief Justice or Faculty Advisor.
  2. Chief Justice assigns a Justice to investigate the alleged violation.
  3. The assigned Justice contacts the student to gather information, review the procedure, and schedule a hearing.
  4. Honor Council hears the case.
  5. Honor Council deliberates with one of the two outcomes:
    1. Not Responsible: Student receives an immediate verbal notification followed by an official written notification.
    2. Responsible: Student receives an immediate verbal notification of the decision and the sanction and then will receive an official written notification. The student then has an option to appeal the decision:
      1. No Appeal: The Honor Council maintains a student record of the violation until the student graduates from Mercer.
      2. Appeal:
        1. The student submits a written appeal to the Dean of his or her college or school.
        2. The Dean appoints a representative to investigate the criteria of the appeal.
        3. The student receives written notification.
