(Macon, GA) - The Department of Political Science encourages students to conduct original research and to consider presenting their works at professional conferences. Over the past few years we have had a number of POL and IAF majors present in selective academic conferences at the state, regional and national levels. The next group of students to do so will be attending the upcoming Georgia Political Science Association Conference in Savannah from November 17-19. The students and the titles of their research are as follows:
Ashley Deadwyler - "The Plight of Orphaned Children in Africa: National and International Inadequacy."
David Klein - "South Africa and the Effects of Colonialism on its Government, Economy, Education, and Equality"
Kimberly Lawrence - "European Union Environmental Policy: A Shared Responsibility?"
Beth Russell - "Crafting the European Union Through Correct Partnering"
Allison Solomon - "The Fair Trade Cure: Fair Trade Economics as a Solution to the African AIDS Pandemic"
Please congratulate these students on their significant achievement when you see them.

(Macon, GA) - Political Science Scholarships for Fall 2006 Announced
Thanks to the continuing generosity of Dr. James L. Cox and his wife Sandra Hickman Cox, the Department of Political Science is in a position to offer several scholarships that recognize the accomplishments, and support the career ambitions, of students in the Department of Political Science. The funds are awarded through the Cox-Hickman Endowed Scholarships Fund and stipulate the following:
The Political Science Scholarship ($530) : This is an endowed scholarship available to undergraduate Political Science majors, juniors and above, who have an outstanding academic record and extraordinary involvement in campus and/or community organizations and activities. Selections will be decided by the faculty of the Department of Political Science and preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need. The recipient must be a Political Science student, enrolled full-time with a minimum 2.75 GPA required for every semester completed. Scholarships are applied towards the Mercer tuition balance owed by the recipient. The award is for one year, but junior recipients may re-apply. Two awards will be made this year, but when the corpus has grown to a sufficient size that an additional scholarship may be provided without reducing the corpus, another scholarship will be added.
Pre Law Scholarship ($530): This grant was established to honor the retirement of Dr. James L. Cox. Dr. Cox, who served as the pre law adviser for over 20 years and helped a countless number of students prepare for, and gain admission into, law schools. Only junior or senior pre-law track students with a minimum POL and overall GPA of 3.0 are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Selection will be made by the Political Science Department based on an outstanding academic record, service and demonstrated financial need. The award is for one year, but junior recipients may reapply. Recipients must have a strong desire to attend law school and pursue a career in law. Scholarship is applied towards tuition balance owed to Mercer.
International Studies Scholarship ($530): This scholarship was established to encourage students to take more interest in the study of global affairs, cultures, languages and peoples. To be eligible, a student must be a rising junior pursuing a course of study in International Affairs or the international studies track in the Political Science major. A single scholarship will be awarded and applied directly to the student's tuition balance owed to Mercer University . The award is for one year, but junior recipients may reapply. Selections will be made by the director of the Department of Political Science based on outstanding academic performance (defined as an overall and major GPA of 3.0 or higher), demonstrated financial need and a strong desire to pursue advanced degrees in the international relations field.
