Why should I apply for an identifying number?

According to IRS Publication 515 "any recipient whose income is effectively connected with a U.S. business" must obtain a taxpayer identification number (when they do not qualify for a social security number).

If you fail to obtain an identifying number, the Internal Revenue Service may find that you do not qualify for tax exemption under IRS code and assess tax at 14% on all scholarships you received. In addition, no one may earn wages at Mercer without a social security number. That is why you should apply for an identifying number as soon as possible. If you get a job on campus, get a social security number before you begin work. If you do not meet work eligibility, get an ITIN number.

How do I apply for a social security number?

Contact the Office of International Students. They will help you apply for this number through the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Office needs to see original documents (your application, certification letter, your visa, passport, I-94, I-20, etc.) so apply for this number in person. It is not recommended that you send your original documents through the mail. The Social Security Administration is located on Riverside Drive just a short drive from the campus.   You must meet "work eligibility" to qualify for a social security number. To see if you meet work eligibility, click here.

Your official printed paper card issued by the Social Security Administration will be mailed first class to the address you provided on your application. If you were previously issued an ITIN number, your new Social Security Number will replace that number. Once you receive the social security number, you should no longer use an ITIN.
