First Year Seminar—essential Mercer course for first-year students that teaches the skills of analysis, interpretation, discussion, and writing that are crucial to all the other courses of a liberal-arts education. Faculty members are prepared to teach FYS courses through a 3-tiered system: faculty members initially learn the core program pedagogies by spending one semester observing a class presented by an experienced FYS instructor. The College of Liberal Arts also supports the travel of many FYS faculty members to FYS-related short courses and teacher training workshops to broaden educator backgrounds. And every summer at least one core program invites faculty members to join a reading group or workshop for further development as FYS instructors.

Interdisciplinary Studies—5 multi-disciplinary programs that provide a holistic and integrated approach to a liberal education by bringing the resources of our heritage and disciplines to bear on contemporary cultural issues and concerns. Faculty members are prepared to teach IDS courses through a 3-tiered system: faculty members initially learn the core program pedagogies by spending one semester observing a class presented by an experienced IDS instructor. The College of Liberal Arts also supports the travel of many IDS faculty members to IDS-related short courses and teacher training workshops to broaden educator backgrounds. And every summer at least one core program invites faculty members to join a reading group or workshop for further development as IDS instructors.
