The Engaged University:
Assessment

Mercer acknowledges that assessment of ineffable effects, such as moral development, is extremely challenging. The University follows the Logic Model, which is based on the Harvard Family Research Project (HFRP Performance Measures). This model distinguishes 2 performance measures as outcomes to be assessed. Measures of effort are the direct outputs of program strategies and activities. Outputs are the countable products of the program that point to what and how much the program accomplishes in quantity not quality. Measures of effect address student learning and are the desired changes in the target population.

Measures of effect on student learning and measures of institutional effort will be used in assessing achievement of the QEP goal. Only measures of effect will be used to measure the learning outcomes:

  1. Increasing students’ capacity for perceptive moral judgment
  2. Increasing students’ capacity for faithful moral commitment
  3. Increasing students’ capacity for integral moral action
