Digital Storytelling: Tradition Meets Technology

Stories are our oldest and most trusted teaching tools. Through stories, we share our history, our experiences, and our knowledge. Thanks to New Media technologies, our stories can now be created digitally and shared with the world. Everyone has the power to become an author, editor, producer, and artist; we can all be digital storytellers.

Digital storytelling ties together elements of the personal narrative, visual representation, and new media production. This emergent technology deserves a respected place in the classroom, as it offers new techniques to help develop the writing and critical thinking skills of all students. By helping students find their own voice, and write their own stories, we can create a learning environment that will both engage and empower those we wish to teach.

The technology is easy to use, and the Media Center provides the instruction and support needed to make each digital storytelling assignment successful. Our center utilizes Apple's iMac computers and iLife software suite (iMovie, iTunes & iPhoto), along with scanners and cameras to help faculty, staff and students become digital storytellers. We have had a wonderful experience creating digital stories at Mercer, and we would love to work with you, too!
