Student

MSTCO students can complete both certificates and a degree program.

Modular Course Structure

To most effectively educate students in key areas of technical communication, courses are taught on a modular basis. Four modules are in place, each of which consists of two courses. The modules are as follows:

  • Foundations Module
  • Design Module
  • Management Module
  • Applications Module

Students typically complete one or two modules during an academic year. Students take the modules in the order they are offered, depending on when the student enters the MSTCO program. Two modules are currently offered each academic year, alternating every other year.

The program's modular structure allows students to focus on particular areas of study relevant to their needs and career aspirations. Therefore, students interested in only one module may attain a graduate certificate in that particular module whereas students interested in earning a complete Master of Science degree must complete all four modules. A third path of study, a Minor in Technical Communication Management, is also available to students enrolled in other Mercer graduate programs.

The following table summarizes the requirements for each path of study:

Path of Study Number of Modules Needed Degree or Certificate Received
Master of Science in Technical Communication Management All 4 modules, an elective, and TCO 685 (Project Research) Master of Science degree plus graduate certificate for each module
Minor in Technical Communication Management Three courses Minor (and graduate certificate if two of the courses constitute a module)
Graduate certificate Any module Graduate certificate for each module completed
