Program Highlights:

Service Project Coordinator: Cooperative Baptist Fellowship

Project: Constructing water filtration systems

Service Project

Our service project coordinators are two recent Mercer alumni who have volunteered for a two-year service commitment with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.  We will work closely with them and the local people on four projects:
  • We will construct basic water filtration systems along a nearby polluted river so that families can have access to clean water.
  • We will help with the medical boat that runs up and down the river, offering free services to people in need of medical care.
  • We will assist in the operation of an example farm that teaches sustainable and economical farming methods with nutrient rich food to local small-scale farmers
  • We will offer tutorial activities for local children at the example farm that do not have access to adequate schooling
This will be an exciting opportunity to travel to an exotic place, meet some of the world's friendliest people and make their lives better.

Academic Component

Dr. Johnston's course will satisfy a General Education Requirement.

Dr. Nelson's course will be a unique blend of multiple disciplines as his description explains.

We will examine the global issues of water as a scarce resource, of freshwater and foreign policy, and of water as a source of conflict. In Southeast Asia, we will work with a local team to help build and maintain water purification systems. Our academic work will provide context and meaning for the service project which will provide a practical application of what we learn. In addition, we will examine the culture, religions, history, politics, and economy of the region to allow us to connect to the people we are working with and to discuss the similarities and differences of their national character to our own.

Excursion

On the second weekend, our group plans to travel to the beautiful island of Bali.  There are fabulous beaches and wonderful restaurants.  You won't want to miss this.
