Program Highlights:

Service Project Description: Our project involves assessing and restoring a watershed, and monitoring water supply and quality to an orphanage, a community or a village in Malawi.  When water falls to the earth, the area of land upon which it impacts is called a watershed.  Implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) utilizing community based natural resource management (CBNRM) approach in the watershed has a positive effect on the quality and supply, runoff and erosion control and overall groundwater protection for sustainable management of these water catchments.  Tasks that students may work on include:

  • Drilling a bore hole to provide water for human consumption.

  • Planting trees and native grasses for restoration/rehabilitation of a degraded watershed.

  • Constructing storm water drainage systems to enhance water quality.

  • Monitoring the quality of the water supply.

Tentative Dates:    June 7 - June 28

Tentative Excursions:

  • Lake Malawi National Park

  • Safari to Liwonde National Park
