The Alpha-Beta Chapter of Kappa Sigma

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity is dedicated to establishing and maintaining the following:

Love: of humanity through concern, charity, service, respect, and tolerance.

Loyalty: to fellow brother, chapter, Fraternity, school, and country.

Morality: in word and deed through truth, honor, virtue, integrity, and justice

Responsibility: to self through healthful living and upright action, and to others through positive leadership, emotional support, open communication, and sound fiscal management.

Commitment: to spiritual, intellectual, and social potential leading to personal development.

The traditional founding of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity dates back to the 1400s. The first chapter in America was established in 1869 at the University of Virginia by five friends. Together, they drafted the first Kappa Sigma Constitution and thus created the first chapter.

The Mission Statement of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity is "The ideals we persue determine who we are and what we will become."

The Fraternity should complement and enhance the educational mission of the host institution. The Fraternity is committed to fostering a close cooperative partnership with the college in which it exists. The Fraternity should promote academic achievement and assist each memeber to achieve his academic potential. By helping members adjust to the college environment, we can help them persue their degree goals.

The Fraternity should promote the ideal of Brotherhood. The creation of life-long friendships is a primary benefit of Fraternity membership. The Fraternity fulfills the need of students to have an extended family. As Brothers, our members have an obligation to have a caring concern for the welfare of our members.

The Fraternity should promote ethical behavior and decision-making. Kappa Sigmas are expected to act as gentlemen at all times, and the Fraternity demands the highest standards of personal conduct.

The Alpha-Beta chapter here at Mercer University was founded in 1875. As the 8th chapter of Kappa Sigma we are one of the oldest chapters in America.
