Beyond the Classroom

Phi Alpha Theta
Mercer’s student-run chapter of the National History Honor Society organizes films and speakers (sponsored by Dr. Scott).

Study and Travel Abroad
In the past decade, History faculty have led study tours to Russia (Dr. Cockfield), Ireland (Dr. Klingelhofer), Trinidad (Dr. Klingelhofer), Paris (Dr. Good), and Rome (Dr. Gardner).  At least one Mercer history major each year studies for a semester in Oxford or Reading, England (with Wales, Scotland, and Australia being other popular semester abroad destinations).

Local History Opportunities
The revival of downtown Macon in the last decade has brought renewed and increasingly official interest in Macon’s history (as Drs. Klingelhofer and Scott’s role in restoring Fort Hawkins attests). The Historian’s Craft (HIS 295) and the senior Independent Research Seminar (HIS 495) now afford nice opportunities for local history projects of all kinds. A 2002 research paper on Macon’s Terminal Station is, we hope, simply the first of many local student projects to come.
