global networks As global barriers continue to disintegrate in the communication world, it becomes more and more necessary to prepare students to operate within global communities. Our program both teaches and exposes students to globalization practices. Students benefit from study focused upon effectively communicating with colleagues from other cultures and parts of the world. Study is expanded to include the effects of having a global economy and what that means for technical communicators. For example, technical communicators responsible for producing instructional manuals must understand the cultures to which their manuals are being sent and ensure mistakes are not made during translation that would leave their company liable for injury or death. Global standards and ethics are further discussed and studied. Students also benefit from global connections within the Technical Communication department. Students are able to network with professionals at international conferences as well as benefit from relationships with students in the Master's program. A distance learning program, the department's Master's program is home to students from across the globe. As students within the department themselves, these Master's students recognize the value of a technical communication degree and frequently share job opportunities with their undergraduate counterparts. |
