course Structure

Technical communication courses are not your typical college lecture courses. Rather, they combine study with practice to give you hands-on experience in valuable communication practices. While some courses require the use of computers, such as Document and Web Design, others such as Technical Editing do not. Tying these courses together, though, is the emphasis on real-world projects.

This focus is present in all TCO courses, with students participating on projects such as brochures and websites for organizations both inside and outside of Mercer, research proposals for national funding agencies, usabilty studies for software and technology companies, editing of technical manuscripts real clients hope to publish, and the design of training materials to serve a valuable purpose within outside organizations.

By teaching a skill using theory and books, we lay the foundation for success. By going one step further and allowing students to practice a skill, we provide them with the experience and confidence to perform tasks outside of an educational environment for businesses. Because of the project experience students receive in the classroom, graduates require less training and are able to provide value to employers sooner, thereby increasing their own value within professional environments.
