benefits of double majoring

Students are encouraged to investigate the possibility of combining another major with the technical communication major, especially when preferred career directions are clear early in their academic programs.

"I combined Technical Communication with Information Science and Technology to diversify my education experiences and to allow me to study two of my interest areas simultaneously. Having this combination of majors has made me more marketable and has helped me to land an internship in the information technology field where I can apply both my TCO and IST skillsets."

~Jason Daniel, BS TCO/IST 2007

This option may provide opportunities to combine fields of interest, even widely dissimilar ones. Some fields Technical Communication students have double majored in include:

  • Computer Science
  • Information Science and Technology
  • Spanish
  • Communication and Theater Arts
  • Engineering (various specializations)

This list is evidence of the diversified fields you can explore along with Technical Communication. Because technical communication skills can be applied to such a wide variety of industries, double majoring possibilities are virtually endless.

If you are interested in pursuing a double major, talk to your advisor about the combination of majors you hope to explore in addition to how you hope to combine the two in your future career.
