Senior Design Projects allow students to test their engineering knowledge in a real-world setting prior to graduation. On each project, three to four students collaborate to design, build, and test a realistic engineering system under faculty supervision. Each project is completed for a real-world client in industry, thereby giving students an opportunity to experience engineering challenges paralleling those found in the real-world. While working on the projects, students must consider safety, economic, environmental, and ethical concerns.

Automatic Power Switch
Kyle Gibson (EEE), Patrick Potter (EEE)

Project Goal: To design, build, and test an automatic power switch that can switch to and from the powergrid according to the state of the battery pack, and its ability to run the home. (Mercer Team's part to design) The Mercer University Team, in conjunction with the National Formosa University in Taiwan, and Long Shenq electronics in Taiwan, has been tasked with designing and building a three-part home renewable energy power source. Solar Water Distiller
José Aviles (MAE), Geoffrey Oliveria (MAE), Cristobal Rodriguez (MAE)

Project Goal: To design, build, and test a solar water distiller in Liberia. Liberia is currently in need of a water distiller to provide pure, clean water to a bank of batteries already in use. The batteries cannot make use of normal "dirty" water as it will contaminate the battery cells thus making them useless. Photo Album

Isolation Amplifier for an ECG
Joe Kuhn (EEE), Jay Patel (BME)

Project Goal: To design, build, and test an isolation amplifier. Photo Album

Evaluator: Dr. Hodge Jenkins
Tech Advisors: Dr. Richard Kunz

Knee Joint Corrective Device
Matt Bradley (BME), Jaymi Love (BME), Elliot Sumner (MAE), Chris Wyble (MAE)

Project Goal: To design, build, and test an apparatus to account for limb-length discrepancy, and an unnatural gait. Photo Album

Tech Advisors: Dr. Ha Van Vo, Dr. Richard Kunz

UV Solar Radiation Powered Water Purification System
Bradley Handziuk (EVE), Clinesa Lindsay (CPE), Miguel Maxwell (ISE)

Project Goal: To design, build, and test a small, inexpensive system that will purify surface water with the natural resources available to a third-world African village.
