Using Clickers in the Classroom

Why would I want to do this? (The Gist)

•Each student has a clicker

•Gives immediate feedback to me as to their understanding

•Gives immediate feedback to the students as to their understanding

•Takes attendance

•Grading is a snap

Software and Hardware

•I use iClicker(http://www.iclicker.com/)

•Students purchase the clickers (~$43 at the Mercer Bookstore). Can be sold back to the bookstore or to another student at the end of the term.

•Three options: http://www.iclicker.com/purchase/

•Clickers work from a radio base receiver. (Obtained from iClickerrep, contact info on last slide)

•I run the software from a flashdrive. Can use it on any computer.

•Software is always free.

•Any remote can be assigned as an instructor remote to run the presentation from anywhere in the room.

•Gradebookcan be exported to Excel

Registering Students

•In-class option: takes 10 minutes for a class of 54. (Need to do this only once per term.)

•Self-registration option: student registers through iClickerwebsite. Professor receives registration updates. (Need to do this only once per term.)

Grading

•So easy!

•Many ways. (Participation, Accuracy, Hybrid)

Quizzes and Daily Grade (5%oftotal)

Quizzes will be given daily using the i>Clicker remotes and software. The quiz material will focus upon the recent lecture material. The purpose of these quizzes is to ensure that you are staying on top of your studying and to provide feedback as such to the professor.

Your quiz grades will consist of half participation (3pt) and half accuracy (3pt). The quiz grade will be averaged and provided to you four times during the semester as an indication of your progress.

No extra time will be giving for a student arriving after the quiz has started. No makeup quizzes will be offered. You are expected to bring your clicker everyday; each student will only be allowed 2 opportunities to take a paper quiz if the clicker is forgotten. Students participating in University sanctioned events will receive an excused absence (no grade) for that day.
