The Central South Summer Math and Science Camp is a joint
project of Mercer University, Macon (GA) AAUW, and the Bibb County Public School
System. Designed to reach 5th and 6th grade girls of color in the Central South area of
Macon, project activities will reinforce girls' interests in science, math, and
technology. During the first year of the project, organizers hosted several planning workshops with coalition partners, Mercer faculty, and Bibb County teachers to develop camp curriculum and discuss activities. Plans were presented to school parent teacher organizations, campers were selected by teachers from the schools, and mentors were hired from high schools that the elementary schools fed into. Girls will attended the first camp in June 2000. A follow-up assessment conference will be scheduled in fall 2000 to facilitate long-range planning for the continuation of the project. |
