DROP FOR NON-PAYMENT

Dear Mercer Student:

Over the past several years, we have experienced an ever-growing number of students who register for classes but do not attend and do not pay.  Failure to drop these classes within the drop/add period creates many negative results for the university and students alike.

For example, if a student registers, but does not go to class, or stops attending class without officially dropping, he/she is likely to receive "Fs" in those classes and lower his GPA.  Legally, whether the student attends or not, he/she is financially responsible for classes not dropped.  From the perspective of the University, a seat is reserved for that student in each of those classes.  There may be other students on a waiting list who are denied the opportunity to register, even though the registered student has no plans of attending or paying.  In other cases, a student may register and attend class, but make no payment arrangements.  This results in the student's account becoming delinquent and his/her records being placed on hold so that he/she isn't eligible to register for more classes, receive transcripts, or graduate.

In an effort to prevent this from happening, and bring our policies in line with other universities throughout the academic community, we are enforcing the University policy as stated on page 41 of the official University Bulletin.  The class schedules of the students who do not make acceptable payment arrangements with the Bursar's Office by the last day of drop/add, are subject to cancellation.  Should a student seek, and be granted reinstatement, he/she will be assessed a $50 reinstatement fee and a $25 late payment feeEither full payment, an official third-party billing voucher, enrollment in a Mercer Payment Plan, or proof of sufficient approved financial aid will be required at the time of reinstatement.

We sincerely hope you will understand why the enforcement of this policy is necessary.  With the cost of quality education soaring, we must assure that those who wish to enroll in, and pay for classes are assured a seat will be available to them.

If you have any questions, please contact the Bursar's Office.

Sincerely,

Tanya Barton
