Former President Jimmy Carter and representatives from 21 colleges and universities from across the country participated in the inaugural convocation and dedication ceremony of Mercer newest academic unit, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, on Oct. 21 at First Baptist Church, Decatur. President Carter brought greetings to the more than 700 people in attendance. President Carter joined Dr. R. Kirby Godsey, president of Mercer University, and approximately 125 faculty members and delegates of colleges and universities from across the country in an academic processional.

In its annual Institutional Goals Ranking Report, the Association of American Medical Colleges ranked Mercer University School of Medicine No. 1 in the nation in percentage of graduates entering primary care specialties. The Medical School was also recognized with a Silver Achievement Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians for having a high percentage of graduates choosing to specialize in family practice. In addition, Professor Norman C. Moore, M.D., was named Mercer University’s Distinguished Researcher of the Year.

The Eugene W. Stetson Memorial Library was completely renovated and dedicated Stetson Hall in September and now houses the Stetson School of Business and Economics and the School of Education. The School of Business, which is already fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, is seeking to gain further accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
