Mercer University student James Herndon and Blake Abbott, both of Macon, won individual speaker awards at the University of Alabama debate tournament Oct. 12-14. Herndon, a senior double majoring in communication and theater arts and philosophy, took home the second-place overall speaker award while Abbott, a senior majoring in political science, was the ninth-place overall speaker. Both Herndon and Abbott graduated from Tattnall Square Academy.
Herndon, son of Carolyn and Charles Bishop and Jimmy and Veta Herndon of Macon, and his teammate, Elizabeth Thatcher, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., advanced to the semi-finals, as well as Abbott, son of Danny and Phyllis Abbott of Macon, and his teammate Erin Witte, from Cochran. The success of these teams helped Mercer win debates against Pace University, Samford University, University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Vanderbilt University and Emory University.
Mercer also had the team of Ruth Beerman, a sophomore from Alpharetta, and David Cisneros, a junior from Snellville, advance to the elimination round. Beerman received the fourth-place individual speaker award, while Ben Kenemer, a senior from Dalton, took home the eighth-place individual speaker award. 30 --
