Mercer Welcomes Largest and Most Academically
Qualified Freshman Class Ever

Macon, Ga. -- Mercer University welcomes its largest and most academically qualified freshman class ever when classes begin Aug. 22. This year's 670 freshmen have an average SAT score of 1172 and a median grade point average of 3.52. There are 13 incoming freshman who have a 1500 or higher SAT score.

"The 2001 freshman class is our best ever and we are quite proud of these exceptional students," said Allen London, assistant vice president and director of freshman admissions. "Most of our new students decided to make Mercer their college of choice after visiting the campus and meeting the faculty. That speaks extremely well for the educational experience we provide here at Mercer."

The top two-thirds of incoming freshmen have an average SAT score of 1238. The top one-third has an average SAT of 1312. Among the freshman class members, 28 have a 1400-1490 SAT score, and 65 have a 1300-1390.

"We also have an exceptional group of transfer students this year," London said.

The 154 transfer students have an average grade point average of 3.13.

On Move-in Day, Aug. 18, the University gave its top 190 freshmen scholarship recipients a new Gateway laptop computer and bubble jet printer as a part of their scholarship. The computers were awarded to scholarship recipients who had participated in the UniversityÕs scholarship competition last fall and the students who had scored at least 1300 on the SAT.

"This will be a great year at Mercer as these outstanding students begin their courses and bring their hunger for learning to the classrooms," London said.

The School of Engineering will have a full class of freshmen with 150 students. The average SAT score of incoming engineering students is 1200.

Mercer's graduate and professional schools have set class sizes. The Southern School of Pharmacy, Walter F. George School of Law and School of Medicine have full first-year classes with waiting lists.

Founded in 1833 in Penfield, Mercer University has more than 7,400 students and 1,400 faculty members on campuses in Macon and Atlanta, and is one of the largest Baptist-affiliated institutions in the world. It is the only independent university of its size in the country to offer programs in liberal arts, business, engineering, education, medicine, pharmacy, law, theology and nursing.

Led by President R. Kirby Godsey, Mercer has been ranked among the leading colleges and universities in the South by U.S. News and World Report for 11 consecutive years.
