The Mercer University School of Engineering awarded its first ever Jeffrey Mavro Scholarship to Amy Griswold of Warner Robins. The $1,000 scholarship, given in memory of Jeffrey Mavro, a 1995 graduate of Mercer's School of Engineering who died unexpectedly in 1997 of heart failure, is given to an incoming freshman who intends to major in technical communication, is well-rounded and has good academic standing.
While at Mercer, Mavro, from Saint Petersburg, Fla., was an excellent technical communication student and involved in the theater program. After graduating, he worked for DACG, Inc., a Houston, Texas consulting firm that provides technical communication service to Fortune 500 companies. The scholarship was established with special grants and gifts from DACG, Inc., Mercer faculty, staff and students, and friends and family of Jeffrey Mavro.
In May, Griswold graduated with honors from Warner Robins High School where she was a member of the Thespians Troupe, the Math Club, French Club and was a student council representative. Griswold also earned a varsity letter in cross country and performed in a number of theater productions such as "Grease," "Sweet Charity" and "Taming the Shrew." During the 2000-2001 academic year, she served as president of KAZ Sorority, a community service organization, and the public relations officer for the Junior Civitan.
The scholarship will be awarded annually and is renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient remains a technical communication major.
Founded in 1833, Mercer is a 7,400-student, comprehensive, Baptist-affiliated university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees through the College of Liberal Arts, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, the Tift College of Education, the School of Engineering, the Walter F.
