Hammond named dean of University Libraries at Mercer

MACON, Ga. -- Mercer University has named Beth Hammond dean of University Libraries. The 23-year Mercer employee previously served as university librarian and chair of the Division of Library Services.

"This change in title better reflects the full range of responsibilities and skills Beth exercises in managing the University's Division of Library Services," said Dr. Russell G. Warren, Mercer University Provost. "She is both an administrator and an educator, and Mercer is well-served by her years of experience and training."

As dean of University Libraries, Hammond oversees a budget of more than $2.76 million and a combined staff of 84 employees in seven of Mercer's library facilities. Working closely with the deans, university administrators and department heads, she ensures that library services and collections provide the necessary support for academic programs.

Her responsibilities include the operations of the Jack Tarver Library on the Macon Campus, the Swilley Library on the Cecil B. Day Atlanta Graduate and Professional Campus, and the libraries in MercerŐs Extended Education Centers in Covington, Griffin, Douglas County and Eastman. These libraries serve undergraduate and graduate programs of the colleges of Liberal Arts, Nursing and Education, and the schools of Business, Engineering, Pharmacy and Theology, and the English Language Institute. She is also responsible for academic administration of the faculty in the Division of Library Services.

Since joining Mercer in 1978, Hammond has held various positions in collections, reference, circulation and user services in the UniversityŐs libraries. Before becoming university librarian, she was interim director of university libraries from October 1998 to July 1999.

She is a member of numerous committees and councils within the University. Well-respected by her peers in the library profession, she was recently selected to participate in the inaugural Frye Institute at Emory University. She also served as chair of the Atlanta-Macon Private Academic Libraries (AMPALS) group for 1999-2000.

She received her bachelor's degree in art history and her master of library science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Founded in 1833, Mercer is a 7,400-student, comprehensive, Baptist-affiliated university with academic degree programs in liberal arts, business, education, engineering, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and theology. For the past 11 years, Mercer has been ranked among the leading universities in the South by U.S. News & World Report.
