Warthen Resident Receives Louie D. Newton Excellence Medal

Mercer University graduate Stephanie A. Shelton received the Louie D. Newton General Excellence Medal at the Mercer University Commencement held May 13 in Macon. Shelton finished Mercer with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and completed her degree with a double major in English and Latin and a minor in history.

Throughout her four years at Mercer, she demonstrated her commitment to academic excellence while serving her community. She appeared on the Dean's and President's list every semester since her first year and has been inducted into the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Alpha Theta and Sigma Tau Delta. She has served as a tutor for elementary, middle school and international students, and has volunteered at local nursing homes, the Central City AIDS Network, Aunt Maggie's Kitchen Table and Habitat for Humanity. She has served on Mercer's Student Union Activities Board, the Baptist Student Union Bear Hands Sign Language Ministry Team, the Office of Admissions Special Events Team and the First Year Advisory Board.

At the 2001 Student Leadership Awards held April 6 in Macon, Shelton was awarded The "Papa Joe" Hendricks Award and the Mercerian Award. The "Papa Joe" Hendricks Award recognizes those students who have played an active role in encouraging the hearts of their fellow Mercerians and have been dedicated in unifying the student body and contributing to the campus. The Mercerian Award recognizes those seniors who have excelled academically while still making Mercer a better place through their involvement and contributions to the campus community. Shelton graduated from Washington County High School and is the daughter of Kay C. Shelton of Warthern.

Founded in 1833, Mercer is a 7,400-student, comprehensive, Baptist-affiliated university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees through the College of Liberal Arts, the Eugene W.
