Mercer University graduate Micheal Van Cise of Rome received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award at the Mercer University Commencement held May 13 in Macon. Van Cise completed his degree with a major in history and a minor in English and not only proved himself scholastically, but excelled as a leader within the community.
Van Cise has been named to the President's list five semesters during his tenure at Mercer and has been on the Dean's list every semester. He has been inducted into the honor societies of Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Alpha Theta and Omicron Delta Kappa. He has also served as president of his fraternity and alumni chair of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, and has been a resident assistant, peer advocate, and has worked with the admissions office. He has served on the Honor Council and the Finance Committee of the Student Government Association, and has participated in Habitat for Humanity, intramural sports and the Chess Club.
Van Cise has been awarded the Penfield Scholarship, the Kappa Sigma Scholarship/Leadership award, the Georgia Baptist Student Achievement Award, the Governor's Scholarship and the Nicholson Scholarship, which allowed him to study abroad for a semester at Oxford University in England. At the 2001 Student Leadership Awards held April 6 in Macon, Van Cise received the Mercerian Award, which recognizes those seniors who have excelled academically while still making Mercer a better place through their involvement and contributions to the campus community. He is the son of W. Steed and Martha Van Cise.
