Macon - Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox will address members of The Executive Forum of Mercer University at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, May 17, in the Moot Court Room of the Walter F. George School of Law, 1021 Georgia Ave.
A 1986 graduate of Mercer's Law School and a former editor of the Law Review, Cox is the first woman elected Secretary of State in Georgia. Winning 133 of 159 counties in 1998, Cox took the election with more than 57 percent of the popular vote.
During her term, she has made efficiency and customer service top priorities while relocating several departments to Macon. Cox has also initiated statewide election procedure improvements to modernize Georgia's voting system.
She was an award-winning journalist and practicing attorney before entering public service. From 1993-1996, she was a state representative for House District 160. Named 1994 Conservation Legislator of the Year by the Georgia Wildlife Federation, Cox received the Woman of Courage Award from the Woman's Policy Group in 1995.
Appointed Assistant Secretary of State by Secretary of State Lewis Massey, she served in that post from 1996-1999. The Bainbridge native was named one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend in 1999 and one of "10 People to Watch" by Atlanta Magazine in 1997.
The event is open only to Executive Forum members and their guests. Anyone interested in becoming member can call the Mercer University Office of University Advancement at 478-301-2715.
