Mousetraps Used To Build Vehicles For Engineering Design Competition

WHO: Mercer University freshman engineering students and engineering professor Jack Mahaney

WHAT: They're not working to build a better mousetrap but building a better vehicle WITH a mousetrap for the Freshman Design Olympics

WHEN: 10 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2001

WHERE: Mercer University School of Engineering Building. Go to South Campus Entrance off Mercer University Drive.

WHY: The 40 students enrolled in EGR 107 Ð the freshman engineering course Ð have been designing and building vehicles using old-fashioned, spring-loaded mousetraps. These vehicles will be put to the test in a series of events at the School of Engineering. There are eight categories: dragsters, distance, accuracy, climbing, off-road, boats, amphibious and cable cars. Each category will have four to six design teams competing. This is a fun and challenging way for students to put their designs to the test, and learn the skills necessary to succeed in the engineering field.

There will be many opportunities for fun video and photos. Media interested in doing interviews with students or professors or getting still photographs or video should contact Lance Wallace at (478) 301-4037.
