Senior Nursing Projects Cover Health Needs of the Community
Knowing how to discern a health-related need, then deciding how to address
it is an important part of nursing. Fourth-year students at Georgia Baptist
College of Nursing of Mercer University will present their senior projects from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 23, at the College Center, 274 Boulevard
N.E., Atlanta. The poster presentations are open to the public.
Among the subjects covered in this year's poster presentations are communicating
medical situations with non-English-speaking patients and educating students
about health-related issues from backpack safety to the importance of hand washing.
Some projects include the development of a pamphlet or guide such as "A Family
and Visitors Guide to Isolation in the Intensive Care Unit" and "Developing
a Teaching Tool for Adult Patients with Type II Diabetes in a Family Practice
Setting."
"These projects require students to select an audience, conduct a needs assessment,
implement the project, develop a poster presentation on their findings, then
explain those findings to the faculty," explained JoEllen Dattilo, R.N., Ph.D.,
assistant dean for the Undergraduate Program at the College of Nursing. "Many
projects in previous years have been selected as educational tools by local
hospitals and health care organizations and some have been published in professional
journals."
Before the projects are opened to the public, the nursing students must make
a presentation on their projects before the nursing faculty. "The students have
to be able to discuss all the steps they have taken, their findings and how
they would improve on the project the next time," explain Dattilo. "These senior
projects demonstrate how a student can evaluate a situation and develop an approach
to addressing the need. It is part of the lifelong learning skills that nurses
must have."
