MACON-- A Mercer University Law team recently finished fourth at the National American Bar Association Client Counseling Competition in Sacramento, Calif. Coached by Mercer Law professor Dave Oedel, Laura Voght, a third-year law student, and teammate James Parker, a first-year law student, won the regional competition at Florida State University to secure them a spot at nationals.
Only 12 teams can qualify for the national competition, where Voght and Parker competed against teams from schools such as Georgetown, George Washington and Nebraska. Teams were evaluated on their overall performance of client counseling. In the competition, an actor played the role of a client while teams were faced with how to handle ethical questions, practice the substance of law and help the client to clarify his or her problem.
The Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law is one of the oldest law schools in the country. The Woodruff Curriculum, Mercer Law School's model curriculum, focuses on ethics and practical skills. It was honored with the Gambrelli Professionalism Award from the American Bar Association for its "depth and excellence" and "obvious commitment to professionalism."
