Mercer Medical Students Join Others Across The Nation
As They Learn Their Fate During "Match Day"

Macon Ñ At noon today, as part of the annual Match Day rite of passage, Mercer University School of Medicine seniors learned which residency programs they will enter following graduation. They were among more than 23,000 individuals to participate in the Match.

Seventy-two percent of Mercer's graduating seniors will enter residencies in internal medicine, general surgery, family practice and pediatrics. Other students will enter residencies in such fields as emergency medicine and obstetrics/gynecology, among others.

Prior to entering a residency, medical students must complete four years of medical education. Following graduation, they enter residencies, which last from three to five years, depending on the area of practice. Between 65 and 70 percent of Mercer's graduates return to Georgia to practice medicine after completing their residency programs. Still others will return after fulfilling military obligations.

Mercer University School of Medicine and the State of Georgia have a long-standing partnership dedicated to improving the health care of the citizens of Georgia. The School graduated its first class of medical students in 1986. Today, 242 Mercer Medical School graduates have completed their residency training and are currently practicing in Georgia. Eighty-seven percent are practicing in the areas of family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine and psychiatry. Of those, more than 50 percent are practicing in federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Areas.
