Macon, GA. Ñ Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law announced the recipients of the 2001 Outstanding Alumnus and Meritorious Service awards at its annual Law Day luncheon held on March 9 at the Macon City Auditorium. Evette L. Simmons, JD '82, received the Outstanding Alumnus Award and Charles R. Adams, III, BA '80, JD '83, received the Meritorious Service Award.
Simmons is an equity partner in the law firm of Ruden, McClosky, Smith, Schuster & Russell, P.A. in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Formerly, she was President of Simmons & Clyne, P.A., with 10 lawyers and offices in Port St. Lucie, Miami and West Palm Beach. In 1997, she became the first woman attorney appointed by the Florida Bar to the Judicial Qualifications Commission. On August 11, 2000, she was installed as the 58th President of the National Bar Association, which is primarily comprised of a network of more than 20,000 African-American lawyers, judges, law professors and law students. In her community, Ms. Simmons served on the Board of Directors of the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce and twice as Vice President of Governmental Relations. Ms. Simmons has received a number of awards and honors, including having a day named in her honor by the city of Fernandina Beach and the county of Dade and being featured in Lawyers Weekly USA.
Adams is in partnership with his father, Charles R. Adams Jr., at Adams & Adams in Macon and Fort Valley, where he engages in the practice of civil law. He has served as an adjunct professor at Mercer Law School since 1988. Mr. Adams was appointed as an instructor of Legal Writing the semester following his graduation from law school in 1983 and taught a section of that course for four years. In 1987, along with other adjunct faculty, he began teaching the Appellate Practice course. An avid supporter of the Mercer Law Review, Mr. Adams wrote the history of the Review for the fiftieth anniversary celebration, and he served on the editorial board of the Journal of Southern Legal History, which is housed at the Law School. Among his many civic and community contributions, Mr. Adams served on the Board of Governors of the Grand Opera House from 1988-95. He also served on the Law School Alumni Association Board of Directors.
