Private vs. Public Higher Education

Who offers the most for your money? Parents and students regularly pose this question. Reality is, both private and public institutions have much to offer. However, private schools possess some distinct advantages over their public counterparts. Consider the following when comparing the two:

The personal atmosphere. Many times private schools surpass their peers in creating a "homelike" environment. Private schools have the ability and resources to offer the personal touch often lacking at larger, public schools. The small, private institution treats its student body as "people" not "numbers." This environment benefits students academically as personal attention from professors enhances the classroom experience.

The price myth. We often hear that private schools are more financially draining. Nevertheless, you should examine each school on a case-by-case basis. Many private schools make a concerted effort to lower their costs while offering smaller class sizes and personal attention. For example, some private schools provide comprehensive financial aid packages that offer students merit scholarships, grants and loans, and work study. Some schools even strive to keep their tuition in line with public schools. Many times students discover that due to the financial assistance they receive, attending a private school actually costs less than attending a public university.

The four-year scenario. Many times students at both larger, public institutions and smaller, private schools take more than four years to complete their degrees. However, a recent survey in one state indicates that private schools are more likely to graduate their students in four years. This is one reason why attending a private school can actually cost less as finishing college in four years keeps overall costs down. Willet2.jpg (49705 bytes)
