
Elizabeth D. Hammond, B.A., M.L.S.
Dean, Division of Library Sciences
Elizabeth Dankert Hammond has served as Dean of University Libraries since 1999. Prior to that appointment, she served Mercer in various administrative and public services library positions since 1978, including two terms as Interim Library Director. Ms. Hammond received her B.A. in Art History and her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dean Hammond is responsible for operations of the Jack Tarver Library on the Macon campus, the Swilley Library on the Cecil B. Day campus in Atlanta, and Libraries at the Regional Academic Centers. These libraries serve undergraduate and graduate programs in business and economics, education, engineering, liberal arts, music, nursing, pharmacy and health sciences, theology and adult education programs. As Dean of University Libraries, Hammond oversees a $4 million budget and a combined staff of 80 Mercer employees serving six library facilities. Working closely with the deans, university administrators and other department heads, the Dean ensures that library services, technology, facilities, and collections provide top quality, responsive support for the academic programs and the research agenda of the University.
Hammond is Dean/Chair and Associate Professor in the Division of Library Services, an academic unit of the library faculty. She serves on a number of administrative bodies, including Academic Council, Council of Deans, and University Planning Council. In 2007, she chaired a UPC subcommittee that drafted a new Vision Statement of the University.
Dean Hammond is active in professional associations, particularly the Association of College and Research Libraries. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Lyrasis, a regional membership organization for libraries and information professionals and is a reviewer for College and University Libraries. In 2000 she was selected for the inaugural class of the Frye Leadership Institute, an intensive two week experience for emerging leaders in library and information technology in higher education.
