The southern studies program at Mercer University examines the complex history and culture of the U.S. South.

The program offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate concentration that studies the region from multiple perspectives including courses in African American studies, English, history, political science, and cultural studies.

The program hosts the Lamar Memorial Lecture Series, the most prestigious scholarly lectures on southern history, literature, and culture. Gary Gallagher, Nau Professor of History at University of Virginia, gave the lectures in 2011.

In the spring of 2012, the program will host a series of lectures sponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council on Civil War Memory. Lecturers include Fitz Brundage of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Robert Cook of University of Sussex.

In the summer of 2012, the program will hold an NEH institute for high school teachers on cotton culture in the U.S. South, 1865-1965.
