MERCER BASKETBALL COACH BILL HODGES ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

MACON, GA. -- Mercer University head men's basketball coach Bill Hodges today announced his retirement from coaching, effective Feb. 22.

Hodges, who took Mercer to the Trans America Athletic Conference championship game in 1995 and 1996, has compiled a 62-104 record during his six seasons with the Bears. The team is currently 3-20 with three games remaining in the 1996-97 season. Mercer closes out its schedule on Feb. 22 against Jacksonville State.

Mercer Athletic Director Bobby Pope said a search for Hodges' successor will begin immediately.

"It's imperative that we have a new coach in place as soon as possible for recruiting purposes," Pope said. "April 10 is the first date for the spring signing period."

"I want to thank President (Kirby) Godsey and Mercer University for allowing me the opportunity to coach its basketball team over the past six years," Hodges said. "Our greatest achievements have not been on the basketball court, but in graduating our players. I wish we had been able to win every game, but I can be satisfied in knowing that we helped young men become adults who could step into the world with the knowledge and the maturity to be leading citizens." --30--
