What to Expect as a Student
What to expect upon entering college is the daunting question on every incoming student's mind. What will the coursework be like? How about the professors? How many classes will I take? Will I have time to take part in activities other than classes? If you are wondering these questions, rest assured knowing you are not alone. While different universities, as well as schools within our own university, have different policies, the following expectations lie on students within Mercer's Engineering School. In regards to coursework, all incoming freshman engineers take the same first-year classes, amounting to on average 15-16 hours of classes/week. As the courses are rigorous, approximately three hours of study outside of class are recommended for every one hour in class. For more information on courses, please see the Engineering Core. Upon entering the school, every student will be assigned an advisor. This advisor will help you with troubles you may face in classes, offer advice on future schedules, and mentor you on choosing an engineering specialty. Students will be assigned a new advisor during their sophomore year, once their specialty is clearly defined. Despite the difficult coursework, good time management skills will allow students time to get involved in student activities whether inside the Engineering School, such as professional societies, or outside of the Engineering School, such as greek life. |
